March 28th 2009, 8:30 pm, what will you do to help the world we live in?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been on this planet since 1970, growing up blind to the fact, like many others to know what would happen by the time the year 2000 rolled around. Not once did the thought ever cross my mind that this world, Mother Nature would turn on us as people. Yet now as the year 2009 recently rolled around, we see that’s exactly what’s happening. It’s inheritably in our nature to destroy, be it each other, or the very world we call our home.
Every year storms become super storms, tsunamis become more powerful, ice caps melt at an enormous amount of ice into the oceans that continue to rise and flood lower laying lands. Is it our own short sightedness that keeps us from seeing the bigger picture? When will we, as the people of this world come together and tell every form of government to stop? Stop the petty issues of your own needs, and start growing as one world to confront the very issue that will kill us all. Not crime, not drugs, not terrorism, not money, but the very issue that should be on the top of every bodies list.
Without a considerable effort towards change, the world will unfortunately descend into a downward spiral. This could result in dramatic climate changes or worldwide extinction of not only animals, but humans as well. We must open our eyes, and demand from our government the needs that truly must be met and dealt with over the other petty issues. This is our home, why are we leaving it up to our children and their children to deal with when it’s too late, do something now, stand up and tell your government stop, and start dealing with the truly important issue of this world.
This is our world, there is no other like it, and there is no place to go when this world has given up on its people inhabitants. When animals go extinct, some feel sorry, some cry, some don’t do anything. When people go extinct, who will be left to morn us?
Jaywalking vs. Crosswalks
The average fine for a jaywalking ticket is $300; the average bill for an ambulance ride to the hospital is around $1000. Now we all know no one wants to be hit by a car for jaywalking, but considering the fact a lot of cross walks in Vegas doesn’t have a signal the pedestrian still takes the risk of being hit by a driver is there. However legal it is for a pedestrian to cross the street at a cross walk, the drivers don’t like to stop, much less slow down to allow people to cross the street.
I personally have come close to being struck in a crosswalk almost 18 times now since I moved to Vegas, this is down right obscene. Driving is a privilege not a right, it seems the drivers in this city just don’t care. Most of the time they have nerve to yell out the window at me for crossing in the walk, making them slow down, as if where ever they are going is not going to be there, so they have to get there as fast as possible.
I will be conducting a private based poll on this matter; the duration of this poll starts February 15, and ends March 15. I’m hoping to get feedback on this subject from as many Las Vegas residents as I can.
DRIVERS
When driving through a crosswalk, and see a pedestrian waiting to cross or crossing at that time do you
A-always slow down and come to a stop
B-speed up and try to beat the pedestrian across the walk
C-sometimes you stop, sometimes you speed up
PEDESTRIANS
When at a crosswalk, and see one or two cars approaching, but still far enough away to stop do you
A-walk through the crosswalk hoping the driver is responsible enough to yield to you
B-purposely walk as slow as you can through the crosswalk
C-wait until no car at all is approaching
I’m also hoping that with this poll more care can be taken into consideration that the city will add more walking signals to crosswalks that don’t have lights connected to them. That’s what this whole poll is related to, crosswalks that don’t have stop lights connected to them. No one will be singled out; all post replies will remain anomies. Please send all replies to seen_stress@hotmail.com
The Story of Valentine's Day
February 14th is Valentines Day - a worldwide celebration of love and romance, marked by giving red roses and chocolate hearts or by sending valentines. Often derided as a "Hallmark holiday," Valentines Day - also known as Saint Valentines Day - is certainly a boom for greeting card companies, florists and chocolatiers. But long before the mass marketing, Valentines Day was still a high point for courtly love.
So, how and where did the holiday get its start? And who is Saint Valentine and why has he become the symbol for love?
For starters, Saint Valentine is probably not just one man, but rather any of a number of martyred saints named Valentine or Valentinus, derived from the Latin word for valor. According to Christian tradition, all of these Saint Valentines are believed to have been martyred on February 14.
The first Valentinus, Valentine of Rome, was a priest and doctor, who treated even those patients who could not afford to pay him. The second Saint Valentine was beheaded for protecting Christians from the Romans. And the third is Valentine of Terni, a bishop believed killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian.
While these saints likely bestowed upon Valentines Day its name, they still do not explain the holiday's love connection. To understand that, one has to go back even further in history - to the Romans.
Historians believe that the holiday of love derives its origins from the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia. On February 15, the Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercus, to honor and thank the wolf god who watched over the Roman shepherds and their flocks.
While Lupercus doesn't seem to have much to do with romance, there was a number of fertility customs associated with his feast. In one of these rituals, women would put their names on slips of paper in a box, to be drawn out by men. The two would then be coupled up for the duration of the festival - or for the rest of the year in some cases. This fertility-friendly feast gives some clue as to the romantic - or at least procreative - nature of the holiday. But we don't celebrate Saint Lupercus Day on February 14th. So, how did the Valentine saints become associated with the Roman god?
Legend has it that in the 3rd century, the Roman emperor Claudius II banned marriages to prevent draft dodgers. Only single men had to go into the army - and too many young men were getting married.
A Christian priest named Valentinus of Rome ignored the ban, continuing to officiate marriages in secret. Valentinus was caught and sentenced to death - an order carried out on February 14. Another story tells of a priest named Valentinus who was jailed and later executed for helping Christians. He fell for his jailer's daughter and sent her plaintiff love notes signed "from your Valentine".
In the late 5th century, Emperor Gelasius declared February 14th a holy day in honor of Valentinus (probably the first, but perhaps the second), allowing Christianity to adopt some of the love day customs previously associated with paganism.
The traditions were reworked, however, to honor the Christian martyrs. For example, instead of boys pulling girls' names from boxes, both boys and girls chose names of martyred saints to emulate for the year.
It took nearly nine centuries, until the advent of the Renaissance, for Valentines Day to return to its earlier love-based roots. With Romantic art, poetry and music flourishing, the time was ripe for a celebration of love.
Amor Mahadi aka loooooong aka scam artist and liar
This so called self proclaimed king, king of what I’d love to know. Claims to be a leader in the Sovereign Church of Christ. However, this is very hard to believe from the way he acts, speaks, thinks, and what ever he does. I may not be the most religious person on the face of this plant, but I know most every person that attends some form of religion in some type of REAL church doesn’t go around proclaiming to be a king, teaching others how to steal property that doesn’t belong to them, thinks he is above the law of the land he was born to and lives in.
If he and this so called queen of his, along with the FEW followers that seem to hang on to his every word don’t want to follow the law of the land they live in, then perhaps they should move to another country, say Iraq or Iran, where the men mistreat the women there. From what I pick up of the YouTube videos I’ve seen, as well as the radio shows he’s done, he’s nothing but a terrorist himself.
In some ways I do agree with some topics he mentions, such as the Constitution, the bill of rights that seem like nothing more then paper due to the Patriot Act. Thank a lot Bush, you devil scum piece of shit.
However, no matter how much I hate things the way they are in this country; I have chosen to live by the laws of this land. And continue to hope this country will get better. Well now that Obama is in office, perhaps things will get better, eventually. To me I live the best way I can, I’m poor, but I make my life the way I live it. I live it the way I make it, so I try to make it the best life I can live.
I do this while being a citizen of the United States of America, this land in which my Farther fought for in Vietnam, a senseless war, and my high school sweetheart fought in Desert Storm, yet another senseless war. I’m thankful they both lived to return back to the U.S., but they made a choice, to represent the country they were born in.
If you Amor have the need to put down the way the law of any land is, why don’t you place all your energy in speaking out against the damn Al Qaeda, and those others that seem to hate the U.S. as it is.
Beijing 2008
While I love watching the games, both summer and winter, it amazes me to see how China ousted every other country that hosted the summer games. I found out they spent so much on the opening and closing ceremonies, they nearly bankrupted the country. Not to mention the medals with 3 kinds of jade for the different medals. Then there was the banning of 2 U.S. gymnasts not just from the games, but from the entire contry, simply because they entered the airport with masks on their face. Well with all the concern about air quility issues, I wouldn't wanna take chances either. however, it was very extreme for the country of China to ban 2 gymnasts simply because of their concerns with the air quility of China. Well as we watched the opening ceremony it was evidently clear China spared no expense in showing the world the pride there country has, about it's past, present, and future.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly once the events started, but that was short lived with the issue of under aged gymnasts of the China team. It just seemed to never end, and I gotta say while women of China may age a lot more graceful then any other woman in the world, I did find them looking a lot younger then 16. The passports they held was government issued form China, and with the past reports of their true ages from the nationals, which those web pages suddenly seemed to disappear once they were found by a journalist. Did the government of China forge those passports, simply to benefit from how well those girls were? Perhaps we will never really find out, but then as it turned out, during the opening ceremony a few things were faked. Case in point the fire works, a good deal of them were dubbed in when aired in the U.S. on TV stations. Along with the true voice of the cute little girl that couldn't sing, but she lip synced to the song actually sung by a heavy girl that wasn't so cute.
Then there were swimming records that were smashed, by Michael Phelps, that did what no other Olympian has done before. He won 8 gold medals, it was an accomplishment that can only be tied in 2012 summer games, most likely by him. The games had it all, action, drama, sadness, ecstatic, and much more.It was 17 days filled with so much, that ended with another money no object closing ceremony. My personal opinion on everything, and personal thoughts are this:
China is a communist country, the government oppresses it's people, makes sure they aren't allowed to speak their minds, as well as have free thoughts. It was clear this was stressed when journalists from the U.S. questioned a local Chinese man about his views on certain matters. It wasn't to long when a police man came to make sure the interview wasn't around other Chinese people. Heaven forbid the opinions from an interview will make the mass people of China want to riot. I also found it ridicules that China had to forge, lie, and cheat on the most minute things just to show off. And yes I do believe that's all they did with the opening and closing ceremonies. Spending so much, nearly bankrupting their country, all in the name of ousting any other country that hosted the games. Shame on you China for doing even the small things to make yourself look good.
